Physical Education

We believe that physical health and fitness are very important to a child’s all-round well-being.

PE is a crucial part of the curriculum, and every class has two PE sessions per week. Here is the curriculum map for PE, which has been revised this year: ST MARY’S PE CURRICULUM MAP

At St Mary’s we make the best possible use of the space available to us, and enhance this by using local amenities (eg Seymour Leisure Centre, Paddington Rec, Regents Park) and entering local and London-wide competitions.

For swimming, we use the facilities in the Seymour Leisure Centre, which is within easy walking distance of the school. The children use the school playground and hall for games and dance.

We hold an annual Sports Day for the whole school in the Summer Term, which takes place at Paddington Rec. This year, our Sports Day was on Friday 3rd July.

There are also after school clubs that children can join (subsidised by the Sports Grant). These vary from term to term, but include football (with QPR football club), rugby, dance, Zumba, running and cricket. In 2015, we added drama, fencing and gymnastics clubs, which are provided through Premier Education Group, who also work in classes to support with Creative Dance.

The school has been awarded Bronze level ‘Games Mark’ in recognition of our high quality PE. We have also won several competitions, including the Westminster Football Tournament in 2014 and a local inter-schools sports competition for Year 5 and 6 pupils this year.

This term we have taken part in the following competitions:

Tag rugby

Boys’ football

Girls’ football

It makes a huge difference if parents support us by encouraging their children to be active and healthy (see this leaflet for some ideas: The Importance of Your Child being active) and ensuring that their child has his or her PE kit in school at all times.

The school has been awarded the Bronze School Games Mark for commitment to sport and high quality provision.
