Happy 90th Birthday to the Queen

On Saturday, the Queen celebrated her official 90th birthday. Several of us celebrated at an indoor Street Party in St Mary’s Church on Sunday, and on Monday, we had a specially themed assembly about the Queen and royal tea with Miss Norman. We have been thinking about the ways in which the Queen has kept herself healthy and happy - physically, emotionally and spiritually - and looking at what we can learn from her. Happy birthday, your Majesty!

Tea 13.6.16 QueenGracious God, give our Queen continued wisdom and strength to carry out the promises she has made;
and bless those who are gathered here,
that, by serving others,
we may faithfully serve you, all the days of our life. Amen (adapted from the CofE)

The Tomorrow Project - with the Donmar Warehouse

Today, Year 6 performed a piece of drama they have been working on all week as part of ‘The Tomorrow Project‘ at RADA. The Donmar Warehouse theatre in Covent Garden runs this project to explore with schools what the world will be like in 30 years time. Our theme was ‘the schools of tomorrow’. The children had thought about the sort of skills they need for different jobs, and what classrooms in the future might look like (complete with Virtual Reality goggles!). They performed their piece in front of parents, actors and the pupils of the 3 other schools taking part.

Wear it Wild Day!

Today was Wear it Wild Day at St Mary’s. Children (and adults) dressed up as animals to support the work of WWF in protecting endangered animals. Year 2 had written to Miss Norman to ask for this day, after learning about the plight of different animals at London Zoo. This morning they shared some of their work in assembly, and all the children showed off their outfits!

Year 5 Canopic Jars

Year 5 have been learning about Ancient Egypt this term. In Art, they have been creating Canopic Jars, which were used by the Ancient Egyptians to preserve the mummified remains of people who had died. The Canopic Jars were decorated and buried alongside the mummies. Year 5 worked with clay to make their versions.

Year 1 trip to Regent’s Park

Last week, Year 1 visited Regent’s Park as part of their learning in Science about trees.

They learnt the names of some common trees and about the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees.

Puffin Live Event

Yesterday, Year 5 and 6 attended a Puffin Live filming event at Sadlers Wells. The event was a Myth Writing Masterclass, featuring Rick Riordan who wrote the Percy Jackson series. The children had chosen a god or hero of their choice from Norse or Greek mythology, and some were selected to share their descriptions. The event was presented by Radzi Chinyanganya, the Blue Peter presenter. He was joined by medal-winning athletes from Team GB, who showed the children how to sprint.

The children came away from the event with great ideas for writing, as well as a Percy Jackson t-shirt and book. It was a truly inspirational afternoon - thank you Puffin!

You can see the event on Thursday 26th May at 2pm - more details on the Puffin website: Puffin Virtually Live
