Religious Education

Religious Education is taught as a core classroom subject in which children learn about the Christian faith of St Mary’s church, a variety of religious themes and ideas, and about different world faiths. Children are also given the opportunity to reflect upon different religious teaching and concepts, and develop their spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding. There are two aspects to RE learning: Learning about religions (what people believe, and what they do) and Learning from Religions (reflecting upon our own beliefs and practices). We try to make sure we provide a balance of both aspects within our teaching.

Children learn RE for 1 hour in KS1 and 1 hour 20 minutes in KS2. In the Early Years, children learn about religions and cultures through ‘Understanding the World’ activities.

Here are the topics we are currently studying: RE curriculum 2015-16

RE teaching also takes place at other times such as in the study of other subjects where relevant, during trips and visits (eg to St Mary’s Church, Regents’ Park Mosque, St Paul’s Cathedral), and sometimes through Collective Worship.

How can parents help?

Talking to your children about festivals and special events in your lives is a great starting point. For older children, it may be interesting to visit different places of worship, and to discuss current affairs linked to religious issues.

Espresso Faiths is a great online tool to help children learn about the 6 major world religions: Espresso Faiths

The Church of England has lots of useful resources for learning about Christianity. We follow the twelve Christian Values of the Church of England in our assemblies. You can learn about them here: christianvaluesforschools.com
