Our Approach
At Mary’s Bryanston Square School, our PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship) curriculum encourages pupils to develop their independence, resilience, compassion and a sense of self in order to prepare them for the opportunities and responsibilities of life.
In Foundation Stage, PSED (Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum) is a crucial aspect of the curriculum, where teaching and learning focuses on the development of these skills and responsibilities and develops the knowledge and understanding to make informed choices. Lessons are integrated across the curriculum and take place daily.
In KS1 and 2, PSHE lessons take place weekly, often integrated into a class topic; there are opportunities for it to happen more than this based on the needs of the class or if they are taking part in a project with the local community. During sessions, pupils are encouraged to participate in a wide range of activities in the life of the school and in the wider community. They are encouraged to reflect upon their experiences by considering the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. By understanding and respecting the diversity and differences that constitute our world the pupils will form effective relationships that are an essential part of life and learning. Our Learning Mentor guides pupils in School Council, Green Team and Playground Council to understand that as leaders of these groups, they have a voice and can make changes that impact the school community and the world. She also supports children daily with social and emotional issues to make informed choices about their lives.
How can parents help?
PSHE is all about making informed choices and parents can help their children with this in a range of ways. Areas include:
- Healthy lifestyles: Ensure that your child has a balanced diet that includes 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, has 9 hours or more sleep each night, appropriate daily screen time for their age
- Participating in exercise regularly
- Understanding the qualities and impact of a good friend is
- Knowing where to seek help if they are struggling with issues (friendships, school work, bullying)
- Knowing how to be safe online
- Encouraging your child’s independence in preparation for school and adult life (dressing themselves, packing their bags, road safety, cycle training)
