SMBS Rugby v Wetherby Prep

This afternoon, Year 6 played tag rugby against Wetherby Prep School at their sports’ ground in West London.

Ms Granite said that the class played brilliantly, scoring quite a number of tries. In the end, the score was tied between the two schools.

This is a great opportunity for our pupils to play against a different sort of school (Wetherby is a boys’ independent school), in a much larger space than our school playground.

The children have been able to demonstrate their well-developed Games skills, which they have acquired due to high quality Sports teaching at St Mary’s.

Well done!

Year 6 at the Football Premiership

On Friday, Year 6 visited the Premiership’s Headquarters.

The activities the children did were:

  • meeting a professional referee (Mike Dean)
  • finding out about how football kits are designed and how they decide which kits to wear for each match
  • a quiz on the Premiership’s community work
  • an interactive quiz where the children had to guess what happened next in various matches
  • seeing the Premier League trophy
  • being a sports commentator and filming their own sports news slot
  • finding out about nutrition (some children even tried edible flowers!)

The children had a fantastic time and were, as ever, beautifully behaved.

Early Years Train Ride

On Wednesday, the Early Years went on a train ride to Amersham as part of their transport topic. Here they are, waiting for and enjoying the train:

Y5 Dissect Hearts at Wetherby Prep School

On Friday, Year 5 visited the Science department at Wetherby Preparatory School in Bryanston Square. They were taught how to undertake a heart dissection. Here they are, having a go!

Year 6 at Oxford University

Yesterday, Year 6 travelled to Oxford to find out about Oxford University. They visited Wadham College, where they spoke to a range of students, met the Chaplain in the college Chapel, and had a tour around the different areas of the college. They then braved the weather, to do a short tour of the city, learning about the history of Oxford and where some famous people studied. The children were extremely well-behaved, and asked very thoughtful questions to the students. We hope this will inspire the children to think about their own future possibilities!

Here are some of the children’s comments about their day:

Y6 in The City

Last week, Year 6 went to visit City firm, Tindall Riley, to find out about careers in business. It is part of the City of London’s ‘City Careers Open House’ scheme for schools. They found out about many aspects of the jobs people do in the firm, met some of the office workers and practised their business skills (eg pitching and presenting). It is part of a project we are doing this year at St Mary’s to consider future aspirations. Next week, we are off to Oxford University!

Here are the children in the offices (where their behaviour was highly praised):

Cross Country Competition

Today, children from KS2 went to Regents’ Park to compete against other Westminster schools in Cross Country running. Most of the children are part of the school Running Club. In the Y3/4 race, two of our girls placed in the top 10; in the Y5/6 race, one of our boys game 6th! Overall, St Mary’s came 18th out of all the Westminster schools. Well done - we are very proud of you.
