Year 6 Leavers’ Presentation

On Friday, our Year 6 class put on the fantastic show ‘Shakespeare Rocks’, telling the story of the life of William Shakespeare and some of the backgroud to his plays. We laughed, we cried, and then we laughed a lot more! They performed it extremely well and we were all very proud of them. Mr Riordan continued the afternoon by giving a speech, saying how important it was that whatever happens in life, they care for one another. Jon Ward (Chair of Governors) then presented every child with a book, a special certificate made for each individual pupil, and awarded the school cups to children as voted for by their classmates.

Well done, Year 6. We will all miss you very much.

Art Exhibition

Yesterday, St Mary’s was transformed into an Art Gallery! Every class worked on an Art project, linked to the theme of Water, during ‘Arts Week’ and then displayed their work for parents and visitors to see. There were also filmed Musical performances, which were played during the exhibition, and the choir sang a selection of songs from different films.

Thank you to everyone who came along and supported the children, and to the staff for all their hard work in putting the show together.

Year 6 ‘Fiver’ Project

At the end of June, Year 6 worked on an enterprise project called ‘The Fiver Challenge‘. They each received £5 from Virgin Money, which they invested into group businesses (a bit like the Apprentice!). They had to buy and make their products, work out their costs and profit, and sell their items to the school community. They even made adverts, which they shared in assembly. Some groups raised money for a charty; others put their proceeds towards a special treat for the class.

We were all extremely impressed with their teamwork, attitude, business acumen and salesmanship. Well done, Year 6!

As part of the project, the children made their own adverts to sell their products:

Ice-cream
Candles

F1 (Nursery) Trip to Pizza Express

Yesterday, F1 went to Pizza Express on Baker Street.

The children were able to make a classic Italian Margherita pizza. It gave the children a great experience while picking up some useful skills as well. The children learnt how to knead the dough and create the perfect base. They discovered the importance of using fresh ingredients and they also had a chance to taste some ingredients. The children returned to school with their very own hand-made pizzas. They all loved making their pizzas and all behaved well. Many parents came to help for which we were very grateful.

Rottingdean - Year 2 and Year 5

On Wednesday last week, Year 2 and Year 5 went to Rottingdean on the South Coast to learn about a seaside environment. Year 5 were comparing Rottingdean with where we live in London, looking at the differences in land use; Year 2 were thinking about the beach and comparing it with beaches in the past.

Both classes wrote about their experiences specifically for our website. Here are the winning pieces:

Year 6 visit to BMW

On Friday, Year 6 visited BMW in Camden to learn about the future of cars and associated technology. They saw driverless cars, cars that reflect their driver’s personality and all sorts of amazing new features. While they were there, they had the opportunity to try on VR glasses (and bring some back to school), programme robots and make wallets out of indestructible material. It was a fantastic follow-on to their ‘Tomorrow Project‘ drama, where the children imagined a classroom with VR!

Year 5 Canopic Jars

Year 5 have been learning about Ancient Egypt this term. In Art, they have been creating Canopic Jars, which were used by the Ancient Egyptians to preserve the mummified remains of people who had died. The Canopic Jars were decorated and buried alongside the mummies. Year 5 worked with clay to make their versions.

Puffin Live Event

Yesterday, Year 5 and 6 attended a Puffin Live filming event at Sadlers Wells. The event was a Myth Writing Masterclass, featuring Rick Riordan who wrote the Percy Jackson series. The children had chosen a god or hero of their choice from Norse or Greek mythology, and some were selected to share their descriptions. The event was presented by Radzi Chinyanganya, the Blue Peter presenter. He was joined by medal-winning athletes from Team GB, who showed the children how to sprint.

The children came away from the event with great ideas for writing, as well as a Percy Jackson t-shirt and book. It was a truly inspirational afternoon - thank you Puffin!

Wear it Wild Day

Year 2 have written to Miss Norman to ask the school to have a ‘Wear it Wild Day‘ on Friday 27th May. They started learning about endangered animals on a trip to London Zoo, and were moved by the plight of animals in our world that are nearing extinction. They then studied a range of different animals, writing reports about them, before writing their persuasive letters to the Headteacher. Posters, which the children made for homework, have now been put up around the school giving information about different at risk animals and asking the school to help.

So, on 27th May, everyone is invited to dress up as their favourite animal and bring a contribution of £1 for WWF (www.wwf.org.uk).
